For nearly a decade, the actor and comedian, once one of the most recognizable comedic talents in the world, turned his back on Hollywood, trading blockbuster sets and red carpets for solitude and painting.
Now, the 63-year-old Dumb and Dumber actor, Jim Carrey, has embraced a life guided by personal fulfillment rather than box office success.
“I just didn’t want to be in the business anymore,” Carrey told The Hollywood Reporter in 2018, seated in the living room of his Brentwood ranch-style home, where he lived alone.

In the interview, the comedian revealed that his decision came from a growing disillusionment with an industry he once helped redefine. As corporate influence began to shape creative choices, he felt stifled. Painting, he said, offered a rare kind of unfiltered expression — the type that didn’t require boardroom approval.
Despite his meteoric rise, the actor remained outspoken about the darker truths behind the glamor. He often warned of Hollywood’s instability and the uncomfortable illusions that came with success.
His public appearances began reflecting his detachment. In 2017, he turned heads with an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! where he sported a luxuriant beard and his signature offbeat humor.
The Hollywood Reporter also noted that later that same year, at New York Fashion Week, the comedian called the event deliberately frivolous — a glimpse into his growing disinterest in the superficial aspects of celebrity life.
This shift coincided with deep personal turmoil. In 2015, his ex-girlfriend and makeup artist, Cathriona White, died by suicide — a tragedy that led to legal and emotional challenges for the actor.

Still, Carrey found solace through painting and a quieter existence. Speaking with Access Hollywood, he explained, “I’m taking a break. I really like my quiet life, and I really love putting paint on canvas, and I really love my spiritual life […] This is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists, uh, I have enough, I’ve done enough, I am enough.”
The break extended beyond his career — it was also geographic. According to a source who spoke with the Daily Mail, Carrey sold his longtime Brentwood estate after nearly 30 years and moved to a waterfront home in Maui, Hawaii, where he now spends much of his time.
While he remains largely distant from Hollywood, he has not completely stepped away from film. The Daily Mail also reported that he is slated to reprise his role in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise in 2027 for the fourth installment. In the meantime, he focuses on his life in Maui, where he enjoys the quiet, paints, and selectively develops new projects.
Long before he was a household name, the Liar Liar actor faced significant hardships that shaped his outlook. In an interview on The Howard Stern Show, Carrey revealed that growing up, his family lived out of a car and moved between campsites as his father struggled to find stable work.
Young Carrey and his family rotated between janitorial and security jobs, enduring long shifts and physical challenges. Even through the hardship, he remembered the experience as “amazing” and “unbelievable,” adding that camping in different places brought the family more joy than the work ever did.
For the Bruce Almighty star, stepping away from Hollywood was never an escape — it was a deliberate choice to prioritize creative autonomy and personal growth.
